Fall Moving in Denver: Why October and November Are the Smart Months to Move

October 7, 20268 min read

The best time to move in Denver for most people is October and early November. The May to September rush is over, weekday dates open up, and the weather is usually mild and dry. The tradeoffs are shorter days and the chance of an early snow, since Denver's average first measurable snowfall lands on October 18, so plan a morning start and keep the forecast handy.

We've run moves in every month of the year since 2010, more than 7,000 of them across the Front Range, and fall is the season we recommend most often when a customer has a choice. This guide covers what changes after Labor Day, how we plan around snow and early sunsets, and what to do at the new place before winter sets in. Questions? Call us anytime at (720) 241-3615.

1. Why Fall Is the Best Time to Move in Denver

Fall gives you the best balance of weather, availability, and flexibility of any season in Denver. October highs usually sit in the mid-60s and November highs in the low 50s, which is comfortable carrying weather for crews and for you. Compare that to a July move with 90-degree afternoons, or a January move with icy steps and nine hours of light.

We've written separate guides on the other seasons if you want to compare. Our summer moving guide covers heat and the peak-season rush, our winter moving guide covers snow and ice, and our seasonal moving overview puts all four side by side.

2. Lower Demand and Easier Booking

After the May to September peak, demand for movers drops, which makes your preferred date and time much easier to get. In June, Saturdays and the last few days of the month can book out weeks ahead. In October and November, we can often offer a choice of weekdays and a morning start with much shorter notice.

Let's be straight about price. Across the industry, many movers drop their rates after Labor Day, and you'll see that pattern called an off-season moving discount. We don't do that. Exquisite Logistics Moving charges the same flat rates all year, so a fall move with us costs exactly what a summer move does. What you gain in the fall is availability and flexibility:

  • More weekday openings, including Tuesday through Thursday mornings
  • Better odds of landing the exact date your closing or lease requires
  • Easier rescheduling if a closing slips by a few days
  • Room to split a big move over two days without juggling other bookings
  • Less competition for storage units and truck parking at apartment complexes

Our rates start at $449 for a studio (2 movers, 2 hours), $599 for one bedroom (2 movers, 3 hours), $749 for two bedrooms (3 movers, 3 hours), and $949 for three bedrooms (3 movers, 4 hours), with custom quotes for four or more. Extra time is $165 per hour for two movers or $225 for three, and a flat $99 travel fee covers the first 15 miles, then $1.50 per mile. The full breakdown is on our pricing page and in our Denver moving cost guide.

3. Planning Around the First Snow

Denver's first snow commonly arrives in October, so any fall move needs a simple snow plan. National Weather Service records put the average first measurable snowfall (at least a tenth of an inch at the official Denver International Airport site) on October 18. The range is huge, though: as early as September 8 in 2020 and as late as December 10 in 2021, the latest on record.

The good news is that early-season storms usually melt fast. The ground is still warm and the October sun is strong, so a couple of inches overnight is often gone from driveways by lunch. November storms tend to stick around longer, which is one reason we nudge customers toward October or the first half of November when they have a choice.

Our trucks carry ice melt, floor runners, and extra blankets starting in fall. We check the forecast for several days before every booking, and if a storm makes the move genuinely unsafe, we'll call you early and reschedule at no extra charge.

4. Shorter Days and the Time Change

Denver loses more than two hours of daylight between October 1 and the end of November, so a fall move should start in the morning. Daylight saving time ends on November 1, 2026, which pulls sunset back by an hour overnight. Here are approximate Denver sunrise and sunset times:

DateSunriseSunset
October 1about 6:56 a.m.about 6:42 p.m.
October 31about 7:27 a.m.about 5:58 p.m.
November 1 (clocks fall back)about 6:28 a.m.about 4:57 p.m.
November 30about 7:00 a.m.about 4:36 p.m.

For a three or four bedroom house in November, we like to start by 8 a.m. so the heavy carrying is done before it gets dark around 4:30. Turn on porch lights and garage lights at both homes anyway. Unloading in the dark is when shins meet bed rails.

5. Leaves, Wet Walkways, and Floor Protection

Wet leaves and early frost are the main fall hazards, both for the people carrying and for your floors. A layer of leaves on a front walk is slick after a rain or a frosty night, and whatever sticks to boots ends up on your hardwood. These are our standard fall moving tips for Colorado:

  • Rake or blow leaves off the walkway, porch steps, and driveway the day before
  • Keep a bag of ice melt on hand for frosty October and November mornings
  • Put a heavy doormat inside and outside every entry the crew will use
  • Let us lay floor runners or rosin paper on hardwood, tile, and light carpet
  • Keep doors closed between loads to hold heat in and keep leaves out
  • Wrap upholstered furniture in plastic if there's any chance of rain or snow

Floor protection is included with every move we do. If you want help boxing things up so you're not packing in a hurry before a storm, our packing services cover a single room or the whole house.

6. School, Leases, and Holiday Timing

The smartest fall dates avoid month-end crunches, Thanksgiving week, and mid-semester school changes when you can. A few things to know about moving in October in Denver and November:

  • Month-end still fills up: October 31, 2026 falls on a Saturday and November 30 on a Monday, so book those dates early
  • Mid-month weekdays, roughly the 10th through the 20th, are the easiest dates to get
  • Thanksgiving is November 26, 2026, and the days around it are tight for everyone, including you
  • Kids are already settled into the school year, so if you're changing districts, ask about transfer timing before you pick a date
  • Renters on a fall lease end have more choices, since there's less competition for apartments than in summer

If you're moving to a south metro suburb like Highlands Ranch with kids, a move during a school break is easier on everyone. Our Denver moving day checklist helps you work backward from whatever date you choose.

7. Getting the New Home Ready for Winter

A fall move gives you a short window to winterize the new place before the first hard freeze, so put these on your first-week list. Front Range irrigation guidance generally says to blow out sprinklers by early to mid-October and no later than early November.

  • Sprinklers: ask the seller whether the system was blown out, and if not, book a blowout right away
  • Backflow preventer: wrap it with insulation if a hard freeze hits before the blowout
  • Furnace: replace the filter and schedule a tune-up before the first cold night
  • Detectors: test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and replace batteries
  • Outdoor faucets: disconnect hoses so the spigots don't freeze and crack
  • Snow gear: buy a shovel and ice melt before the first storm, not during it

Is moving cheaper in the fall?

Across the moving industry, many companies lower rates after the May to September peak. Exquisite Logistics Moving keeps the same flat pricing all year, starting at $449 for a studio, so the fall advantage with us is better availability and more flexible dates rather than a seasonal discount.

When does Denver usually get its first snow?
